Porch Talk Activities Guide & Videos

PORCH TALK EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES GUIDE

In conjunction with the Porch Talk book, and with a little funding help from the David D. and Nona S. Payne Foundation, of Pampa, Texas, PAR has created an integrated social studies school curriculum called the:  Porch Talk Education Activities Guide. This is a set of eight lesson plans for 7th Grade, and they are keyed to TEKS requirements so they will be easy for teachers to integrate into the classroom.

Each lesson plan related to a topic discussed in the book and is introduced by a famous cowdog named Hank! We are happy to make them available here, free for teachers to download. The education content was developed by curriculum specialist Jenny Gaona, and the fabulous design and layout was done by PAR’s very own board member, Julie Hodges.

PORCH TALK ACTIVITIES

VIDEO SERIES

When John Erickson, author of the Hank the Cowdog book series, saved up and purchased a tract of Panhandle property near Perryton, it set off a chain of discovery. Who lived in Texas over a thousand years ago? In Porch Talk, John Erickson and his archaeologist friend Doug Boyd investigate this question while explaining the art and science of archaeology for middle readers.

To learn more about how to teach Porch Talk, we partnered with the Ranching Heritage Center at Texas Tech University to create a free downloadable guide for educators that is available on the Porch Talk page. Video guides that explain the curricula and activities can be watched below or on the TTUP Youtube channel.
